GET THE LOW-DOWN ON MERLOT.

Koi Pond is made from Merlot, one of the most loved grapes in the world, second only to Cabernet Sauvignon. It is native to Bordeaux where it is often blended with more structured grapes, offering a soft temperament and classic juicy plum note. Merlot was named after the French word “merle” which means blackbird. Anyone who grows Merlot knows that blackbirds love to eat the ripe grapes right off the vine during harvest. They can always be found in the vineyard trying to sneak a taste.

Koi Pond is light, and soft, with tart cherry and plum and a cocoa finish.

ONLY THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF PRACTICE, NO BIG DEAL.

If you’re surprised to hear that Bulgaria has been making wine for 3,000 years, we feel you. Even with a rich history of viticulture and cuisine, we don’t often get a taste of it here in the West. Until now. Koi Pond is your introduction to a wine region that has been quietly working on its craft for longer than we can count, and it shows. The red wines of Bulgaria are refined, showing purity of fruit and balanced earthy notes.

HOW TO PAIR KOI POND AND FOOD.

Koi Pond is crafted from Merlot, a red grape known for being soft and fruity, but it can handle the heaviest meals you can think of. This makes it a perfect winter wine as it will work with your meals to warm and fill you up. Our favorites are sirloin steak, coq au vin, beef bourguignon, and grilled portobellas.
